1. Templates for disagreeing, with reasons
The term 'home' is mistaken because she overlooks the inner value, not spatial concept, of home.
2. Templates for agreeing.
Tuan is surely right about his argument that place is based on experience because, as he may not be aware, recent studies have shown that value of the place is determined by the experience itself has.
3. Templates for agreeing and disagreeing simultaneously
Although I disagree with much that Tuan says, I fully endorse his final conclusion that people is the main subject that forms 'home.'
Exercise 2
When I was young, I never had chance to live in same place for long time. I was born in Jeju Island, the southernmost island in South Korea, and even in Jeju Island, my family kept moving from one place to another. Thus, the definition of the term ‘home’ was ambiguous for me. The place where I live in has changed all the time that I wasn’t able to build up the feelings of ‘home.’ Also, I had to leave my family, despite of my young age, to attend the high school near Seoul. Thus, the question that popped up in my head while reading the books for the class was “how can I define the term ‘home?’” This project will be a great chance for me to answer the question. In this project, I will answer my question by arguing that the term ‘home’ is not only about space or place, but also about the minds that people have within themselves. I think this project will be a meaningful challenge because I am trying to stand against what Tuan is arguing about the term ‘home’ in his book. Also, this project will be valuable for the people around the world who don’t or can’t live in the place that they are actually from because those people will be able to sympathize with the ideas of my project.
In the book space and place, Tuan says that ‘experience is a cover-all term for the various modes through which a person know and constructs a reality.’ I will construct my argument for final project based on this particular sentence. I believe that experience is the most important factor to form the term ‘home.’ Also, I think the most important mode that can be derived from the experience is emotion. Even though space and place are generally accepted as a spatial concept, the fact that emotion can be one of the most important factors of experience, which constructs space and place, will help me to connect the definition of the term ‘home’ with the minds of people. To be more specific, because a claim that the term ‘home’ is limited to the spatial concept is implied in Tuan’s book, I will develop my argument by refuting this claim by saying that space and place can be concepts out of the spatial concept. To support this idea, I will go deep into the concepts of the term ‘home’ that are mentioned in Tuan’s book. In the book, he also argues that ‘unique to human beings among primates is the sense of the home as a place where the sick and the injured can recover under care.’ In the final project, this argument will be the base of understanding of the term ‘home.’ It is well known fact that people heal themselves when they get mentally injured. Because the term ‘home’ is defined as a place where people recover in the book, the minds of people can be a part of the ‘home.’ I will find psychological studies about how people recover themselves within their minds to support my argument. Furthermore, for multimodal aspect in my final project, I will use the videoHome Is in Your Heart, a song for kids that talks about the non-spatial aspect of ‘home.’ Even though the song is for kids, lyrics of the song present the value of the home in the minds of people. In purpose of using diverse methods for the arguments, I will use the ideas from the novel Home to argue what does the term ‘home’ means to homeless. When I read the readings by Tuan, I thought that Tuan is defining the term of space, place, and home based on the assumption that everyone has a specific place that can be accepted as the ‘home.’ However, this implication does not work for the homeless who have their home in their minds. After developing my argument, I will conclude my project by quoting a sentence from Place by Price: ‘A more realistic treatment of love in relationship to place may be found in work that deals, for instance, with landscapes of memory, for such work is cognizant of the multiple emotions associated with love and place.’ Even though I am trying to develop my argument from diverse and multimodal sources, main focus of the project will be emotion. As Price implies, better understanding of the place can be done by dealing with emotion, which is all about the minds of people. By highlighting the connection between the minds of people and the term ‘home,’ I will conclude my project.
